Understanding the Basics of Homemade Dog Food

As a pet owner, it is your responsibility to make sure your pet’s health is in tiptop shape at all times. And when it comes to the type of food your beloved dog eats, you simply cannot afford to scrimp on quality.

There are plenty of commercial dog eats available in stores, but some animal health experts argue that commercial fare really aren’t as healthy as they seem. Because of their processed nature, some can even cause minor illnesses to some dogs. This is why more and more people are now turning to making their pets’ food themselves.

Dog Food Making:

Before you decide to make homemade dog food, there are few issues you need to first understand. Not all food that is acceptable to humans are acceptable for dogs. In addition, homemade dog food is something that must be well thought of, in consideration of the nutrients that must be contained in a single dish.

A dog’s daily nutritional needs requires high amounts of protein, which can be sourced from lean meat, eggs, and dairy products. Protein should make up 30% of a dog’s diet. The remaining 70% should be a combination of vegetables and grains.

What To Avoid

As mentioned, not all types of food are good for dogs. We often think that whatever we eat is okay for our dogs to eat, as well. So before we decide to give our dogs scraps from the dinner table, we must understand that a canine’s digestive capacity is different from ours.

If you’re following a dog food recipe, it would be wise to stay away from being creative by adding embellishments. What we might think is tasty may be hazardous to our dog’s health.

Here are some of the food that should NOT be served to dogs:

  • - Chocolates
  • - Onions
  • - Garlic
  • - Raisins and grapes
  • - Mustard
  • - Nuts
  • - Cake and Candy

Basic Dog Food Recipe

You can make dog food daily or make them in huge batches and stored in the refrigerator for future consumption. Here is a basic recipe that works for most dogs.

Ingredients:

  • - 6 c of water
  • - 1 lb of turkey, ground
  • - 2 c of brown rice
  • - 1 tsp of dried rosemary
  • - 1/2 pack broccoli, frozen (16 oz)
  • - some carrots or cauliflower

Directions:

Mix all ingredients in a bowl and let it cook in a Dutch oven for around 30 minutes. When the mixture cools, scoop a single-serve amount into your dog’s dish for consumption. You can store the rest in a tightly sealed bag and place them in a freezer. It is recommended that you pre-package single-serve amounts in vaccuum packs, so you only take what you need every meal time.
